Eleven people remain uncounted for following a devastating collapse that claimed lives of 35 people at Kiteezi landfill, last month.

The number was confirmed by the minister of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Hajjat Minsa Kabanda while appearing before parliament’s Committee of Commission, Statutory and State Enterprises (COSASE), where she accompanied KCCA management to address waste management concerns highlighted in the December 2023 Auditor General’s report on Thursday.

During the meeting, the minister emphasized that official figures from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) indicate only 11 individuals are still missing a revision of the 28 people in earlier reports.

“The claims of 28 missing people are speculative. According to the Office of the Prime Minister, 11 individuals are still missing,” said minister Kabanda.

KCCA minister Hon. Hajjat Minsa Kabanda together with officials from KCCA led by deputy Lord Mayor Her Worship Doreen Nyanjura appearing before COSASE on Thursday.

Minsa Kabanda, Minister of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has denied allegations that residents around Kiteezi had encroached on the KCCA landfill, saying that the residents had land titles and owned the land they occupied. She was responding to a question raised by Medard Sseggona (Busiro East), seeking clarification on President Museveni’s source of information that Kiteezi residents had encroached on the landfill.

At least 35 deaths were reported in the August landfill collapse at Kiteezi, and 18 others rescued. The tragic incident resulted into forced displacement of residents who are still accommodated at neighbouring schools, and churches meanwhile as government is looking for a lasting solution.
