Basketball fans across Uganda are set for a thrilling start to the 2026 National Basketball League (NBL) season, which tips off Friday evening at the Lugogo Indoor Arena with a doubleheader featuring women’s and men’s league action.

Namwungo’s star guard Tonny Drilleba will be key against his former team

The opening night pairs emerging contenders with established giants, offering an early glimpse into what promises to be a competitive and compelling season.

Women’s League: Pearl Queens Make Top-Flight Debut

The women’s league opens with newly promoted Pearl Queens taking on a rejuvenated JT Lady Jaguars side. This games tips-off at 7pm EAT.

Pearl Queens arrive in the top division following a strong campaign in FUBA Division One and are expected to test themselves immediately against experienced opposition.

The club has reinforced its roster with proven talent, including former KIU Rangers guards Fidauce Namulema and Ballo Djeneba, alongside seasoned players Agatha Kamwadda and Rachael Nanyonga, underlining their intent to compete at the highest level.

The JT Lady Jaguars, coached by Sudi Ulanga, enter the season with continuity and confidence after retaining much of last season’s squad. The addition of Bridget Aber and Grace Amy Chan adds depth to a team seeking to improve on last year’s performance and push into title contention.

The matchup serves as an early test for the newcomers and a measure of how quickly Pearl Queens can adapt to the demands of top-tier basketball under the bright lights of Lugogo.

Men’s League: Blazers Begin Title Defense Against City Oilers

The night’s headline act features defending champions Namuwongo Blazers against record title holders City Oilers in a rematch of last season’s playoff final. This late tip-off is at 9pm EAT.

The Blazers claimed their maiden NBL title last year by dethroning the Oilers, ending the latter’s long-standing dominance of the league.

Friday’s contest marks the first competitive meeting between the two sides since that decisive series and renews one of Ugandan basketball’s fiercest rivalries.

Namuwongo will open their title defense under pressure as the team to beat, while City Oilers aim to reclaim supremacy and reassert their status as the league’s most successful franchise.

Banza played a key role in Namuwongo’s triumph last season

Much of the spotlight will fall on Joel Lukoji Banza, the reigning league MVP, who recently crossed from Namuwongo to City Oilers. Banza’s lineup alongside Fayed Bbale, Edgar Munaba, and center Titus Lual presents a formidable challenge for any opponent.

Namuwongo, however, will look to counter with new signing Fataki Nyembo, alongside experienced players Tonny Drilleba, Ivan Muhwezi, James Okello, and Jimmy Enabu, several of whom previously featured for the Oilers.

A Season of Transition

The 2026 season will be the first in more than a decade without perennial contenders KIU Titans, who were relegated after finishing last in the previous campaign. Their drop was largely attributed to a shift in recruitment policy that prioritized student players.

With renewed rivalries, strategic signings, and growing fan interest, the new NBL season is poised to deliver sustained competition and drama.

For supporters at Lugogo on opening night, the games mark not just the start of a season, but the beginning of a storyline set to unfold across Ugandan basketball in the months ahead.
