The UPC has today (August 3rd) called on the government of Uganda and the East African Community states to institute a joint regional rapid rescue team to mitigate disasters in member states.
“We need to closely work together as a EAC region and the African Union to have rapid rescue teams ready in disastrous situations,” said UPC
This call has been made by Sharon Arach Oyat, the party spokesperson while addressing journalists at Uganda House on Wednesday.
She proposes for a relief fund to be put in place to supplement gov’t efforts in the reduction of disasters, supporting victims and preparedness.
“We call upon the government to declare this as a national disaster which can help speeding up relief efforts,” urged Arach
In addition, UPC suggests that government declares disaster-prone areas inhabitable and out of bounds one way of lowering the level of uncertainties and misfortunes.
- The party further commended responders of the Elgon region floods and the looming hunger in Karamoja sub region like Uganda Red Cross, security personnels and the locals on the ground for working tirelessly to rescue and save lives.
