The Ministry of Health in Uganda is leading the charge in a groundbreaking initiative to transition their healthcare system from paper-based to digital hospital management systems. With the goal of improving healthcare delivery and streamlining operations, the Ministry aims to combat issues such as absenteeism, monitor performance, enhance commodity accountability, and facilitate efficient service delivery. During the first ever Uganda Digital Health Conference, various stakeholders showcased their capacity in building the necessary infrastructure for digital hospital management systems.
The conference highlighted the importance of having a standardized system that will enable real-time data collection, facilitate easy decision-making, and promote transparency in the healthcare sector.
According to sources, many healthcare systems in Uganda currently rely on standardized data registers for patient information and inventory status. However, lower-level health facilities often face challenges due to limited computer resources and the lack of a digital data management system. James Karugaba the Director of Nursing at Holy Innocents children’s revealed that the smart triage has helped many patients with sepsis receive treatment in the shortest time possible and said there is need for every EMR to have it integrated.
