The Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC) has sounded a warning to the government, about the dangers of indiscriminate waste dumping without recycling.
According to UPC, this practice poses a significant environmental and health risk, putting people’s lives at risk.
Sharon Oyat Arach, Spokesperson of UPC noted at a press conference on Wednesday (August 14) that the challenge of garbage collection is exacerbated by the population pressure and urbanization, emphasizing the need for conscious waste management and disposal strategies.
The party called for the application of science and technology in garbage collection, disposal and prioritizing recycling to produce valuable products like fertilizers, pavers, and bio-gas, which already have a market in the country and region.
“This requires serious research and benchmarking as well heavy investment by both the government and private sector to address the waste management challenge,” said Arach.
Citing out the recent Kitezi landfill tragedy, UPC urges authorities to refocus their efforts towards proper waste management, ensuring that such a disaster never occurs again.
