As the world celebrates International Rural Women’s Day, we honor Musimenta Loyce, a dedicated midwife who has spent 14 years serving her community with compassion and expertise.
From Village to Vital Caregiver, inspired by a relative’s experience with a traditional birth attendant (TBA), Musiimenta pursued midwifery to save lives in her rural community. Since 2011, she has worked tirelessly at Rutenga HCIII, Kanungu HCIV, and currently at Kambuga Hospital.
Transforming Maternal Health, Musimenta’s impact extends beyond hospital walls to community sensitization and mobilization through health education and radio talk shows, strengthening Village Health Teams (VHTs) to track pregnant mothers, sick children, and postpartum women, integrated outreaches and linkage of mothers to health facilities among others.
Despite facing staff shortages, referral system challenges, limited community awareness and lack of promotions Musimenta remains steadfast, driven by her passion for maternal health.
Musimenta’s dedication has earned her numerous awards including Best female staff at Kambuga Hospital (2020, 2021),Smartest Female Staff (2019),Best Diploma Student Midwife at Uganda Nursing School Bwindi (2015) and Best Midwife for Kanungu District in 2014.
In an interview with our reporter, Musimenta urged other rural health workers to join self-development projects and advised women to always seek health advice early, prioritize breastfeeding to raise healthy babies, go for antenatal care to monitor for complications.
As the world celebrates rural women, we honor nurses and midwives like Musimenta and who provide essential care to marginalized communities, bridge cultural gaps and promote health education, support vulnerable mothers and families and demonstrate unwavering dedication amidst adversity.
