Two children have been confirmed dead in Moroto district following a suspected bomb blast on Sunday morning.
Police has identified the victims as Lopocho Alida 12 and Lokuwam, 11. The incident happened in Katiyangole Village, Lokiraut Parish, Nadunget Sub-county, Moroto District.
Mike Longole, Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson said the young boys were hunting for rats when the blasts occured.
“The boys had found a metallic substance, suspected to be a bomb, while hunting for rats in the bush. Unaware of its danger, they picked it up and started playing with it, leading to the fatal explosion,” said Longole.
Longole said that bodies were recovered by community members who responded quickly to the scene. He called on parents to discourage their children from handling or playing with unfamiliar and suspicious objects.
He also noted that the police have initiated an investigation into the incident and will provide a detailed report as more details emerge.
