Kibirige Kassim, a youthful MP aspirant for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat, seeking National Unity Platform has pledged a leadership approach grounded in transparency, accountability, and youth empowerment.
The Nakawa East seat is currently held by NUP’s Eng. Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga who is now contesting for the Kampala Lord Mayor seat. Kibirige says Balimwezo’s exit from Nakawa East politics leaves the constituency vulnerable “without a leader,” but he is confident that his deep roots in community leadership and desire for a fundamental change in Uganda makes him a suitable leader to represent Nakawa in the 12th Parliament.
“I’ve always been passionate about serving my community and empowering the youth,” Kibirige told reporters. “My experience in grassroots mobilization and community development equips me to address the constituency’s first-hand challenges and represent their interests effectively.”
Kibirige is vying for the NUP parliamentary ticket alongside the party’s deputy spokesperson, Alex Wasswa Mufumbiro, in a tight contest as both await the party Elections Management Committee’s announcement of the nominated candidate.
Asked whether he would consider running as an independent if his party does not nominate him, Kibirige emphasized his commitment to the people over party politics. “If not nominated, I’ll explore options that best serve Nakawa East’s interests. But I remain optimistic about working within my party to achieve our shared goals,” he said.
Kibirige also condemned the growing commercialization of politics, particularly its impact on youth participation. “Money-driven campaigns undermine democracy and disenfranchise ordinary citizens,” he said. “We need to promote issue-based politics, transparency, and accountability, and shift focus to people-centered policies.”
For voters, Kibirige pledges a leadership style that prioritizes responsiveness and community development. “My election will bring a fresh perspective, prioritizing youth empowerment, job creation, and development initiatives. Together, we’ll build a brighter future for Nakawa East,” he said.
Other aspirants for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat include Lawyer Fredrick Ruhindi of the NRM and Moses Okwera of the FDC, while several parties are yet to endorse their candidates.
