At least 60 people, including four women and 56 men, were on Sunday arrested in intelligence-led operations conducted across Bushenyi–Ishaka Municipality in Bushenyi District.
According to the Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, the arrests follow a recent spate of aggravated robberies in Bwegiragye, Katungu Cell, and Ibaare in Ishaka Division, which occurred on the night of Thursday last week.
Last week, police launched investigations into violent robbery incidents in which ten people were allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants who beat them up and made off with mobile phones, money, and other valuables. Several victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to KIU Teaching Hospital for treatment.
SP Tayebwa said intelligence reports linked certain groups to the robberies, prompting the weekend operations that led to the arrest of 60 suspects.
“We conducted three operations on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and arrested a total of 60 people, including four women and 56 men,” said Tayebwa.
He added that police, working closely with local authorities, are currently screening the suspects to identify those involved in the robberies.
“They are in our custody, and we are jointly screening to identify those who could have participated in the robbery incidents,” Tayebwa said.
The police spokesperson further noted that suspects found culpable will be charged in court once their case files are sanctioned, and he dismissed allegations that the arrests were politically motivated.
