The government is set to vaccinate over 9m persons against COVID-19 disease when the vaccination exercise commences at the end of February.
This was revealed by the Fountain of Honor, HE Yiweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa on Thursday evening during a Nation’s address on COVID-19 and government phased reopening of schools and education institutions.
The president said vaccination arrangements are expected between the months of February and March this year after government has received the vaccines.
During the address, Museveni noted that government is expecting to receive 3.55m COVID-19 vaccine grant from COVAX facility, a facility grant of countries which go together and funded vaccines for developing countries.
He added that government will procure a total of 18m dozens vaccine to help in the vaccination exercise against COVID-19 disease which has claimed hundreds and thiusands of lives globally.
“Government is in arrangement to buy over 18m dozes from the Serum Industries of India to help in vaccination of over 9 million person.” Museveni said.
In related news, groups vulnerable to underlying conditions like sicknesses, contacts with patients such as Health workers, security personnel, Teachers and the elderly will receive vaccination first than another groups.
On schools and education institutions reopening, government allowed non- candidate classes in Primary and secondary levels that is P.6, S.3 and S.5 to reopen for studies on 1st March whereas Universities and Institutions of learning were also allowed to reopen in March for non finalist classes with no date specifications.
The president further said that other classes will resume studies on April6 after the current candidates are done with their final exams in order to ensure the 2020 Academic Year ends in July2021.
He appealed to Ugandans to continue adhering to the guidelines on coronavirus disease to ensure their health and safety.
