Archbishop Samuel Steven Mugalu has appointed Rt. Rev. Patrick Tugume the caretaker Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese.
The appointment follow the death of the diocesan Bishop, the Most Rev. Benon Magezi who died on June 15.
Bishop Magezi succumbed to COVID-19 at Mulago national referral hospital.
The funeral service to give the deceased a farewell is ongoing at St. Emmanuel cathedral Kinyasano in Rukungiri district where he will be buried.
According to the Constitution and Canons of the Church of Uganda, when a diocese falls vacant, the Archbishop automatically becomes the Bishop of the Diocese and takes on all ecclesiastical authority.
The Archbishop may, however, appoint a retired Bishop to serve on his behalf as a caretaker Bishop.
Bishop Tugume is retired Bishop of North Kigezi and he retired on 8th January 2017, when he was succeeded by Bishop Benon Magezi, now the late.
He will again be serving the diocese for an interim until another Bishop is appointed co sencrated and enthroned.
