Police driver caught on camera carrying passengers in Police van arrested.
Police has arrested its own driver for allegedly misusing a police van by diverting it for personal duties.
The suspect is Sgt/Driver Christopher Opio, attached to the police Public Relations Department.
His arrest comes moments after he was captured on a video which went viral, transporting passengers to Kampala, against the new Presidential guidelines and Ministry of Health SOPs.
According to police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga, they tracked down the driver immediately after watching the video footages and he was intercepted in Koledistrict as he enrouted to his home in Alebtong.
Enanga condemned the act stating that its against fleet management protocols that require all drivers to park vwhicles at their work stations.
“We strongly condemn the actions of our driver, which serves to undermine our enforcement efforts in the fight against COVID-19 in the country. The shameful act is also in direct contrast with our fleet management protocols, where all police drivers are as a MUST directed to park their vehicles at their work stations.” Enanga said.
He hailed the public for recording and sharing the video on acts he calls of gross misconduct by officers noting that the UPF, is a disciplined force, which does not condone any misuse of its fleet especially during this critical period of the pandemic.
In addition, Enanga said that Sgt Christopher Opio is being charged with scandalous behaviour, disobedience of lawful orders and acting negligently in a manner likely to spread the virus. When proven guilty, Sgt Opio may face dismissal from the force.
