Prof Mahmood Mamdani, the Director of Makerere Institute of Social Research [MSIR] has been appointed the Advisory Board Member of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF)
The UNDEF supports projects that strengthen the voice of civil society, promote the rule of law and human rights, and encourage the participation of all groups in democratic processes.
It was established in 2005 by the UN Secretary-General with an aim to supporting democracy through empowering civil society projects as well as help governments strengthen democracy, human rights, rule of law and good governance.
Since 2007, it has registered over 600 projects in over 100 countries in Africa, Asia, the Arab region, Eastern European and Latin America bringing total disbursement to over 160 million dollars. The large majority of funds go to local civil society groups.
Born on April 23rd 1946, the 74yrs-old Prof Manhood Mamdani, is a Ugandan academic, author and political commentator. Upon his appointment as a member of the Advisory Board on UNDEF, he has been working as the Director Makerere Institute of Social Research, the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at the School.
He has also played his professorship roles to the University of Dar es salaam among many others.
Prof Mamdani is a married husband and Dad. His wedded his wife Mira Nair in 1991 with whom they are blessed with one son Zohran Mamdani.
