KAMPALA
Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has once again made his defiant stance clear, rejecting any notion of mercy or political deals, insisting that he will face the courts to prove his innocence.
During a visit by a delegation from the North Kigezi Diocese led by Bishop Onesmus Asiimwe, Besigye spoke firmly from behind the prison walls of Luzira, declaring: “I am not seeking any pardon. I want to prove my innocence in court.”
The opposition figure, known for his resilience in Uganda’s political landscape, maintained a calm but unyielding demeanor. He dismissed any suggestion of backdoor negotiations or sympathy gestures, emphasizing that justice must be pursued openly and transparently.
“There will be no backdoor talks or sympathy cards. Let the law take its course,” Besigye thundered, his voice echoing with determination.
Besigye’s insistence on facing trial rather than accepting forgiveness behind closed doors underscores his long-standing commitment to challenging what he views as political persecution.
The visit by Bishop Asiimwe and his delegation highlighted the continued interest of religious leaders in Uganda’s political affairs, offering spiritual support while respecting Besigye’s firm position.
Besigye’s words are likely to reignite debate over the balance between justice and reconciliation in Uganda’s political sphere, as he continues to demand his day in court rather than concessions outside it.
