Makerere Joint staff association executives have appealed to the university council to constitute a search committee to appoint new vice chancellor before the contract of the current vice chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe expires.
During the joint association executives meeting held on 14th July 2022 which included Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), Makerere university Administrative Staff Association and National Union of Education Institution, the members resolved that the university council led by Chairperson Lorna Magara should immediately constitute a search committee for the position of the vice chancellor as provided by the university laws.
It was noted that the office of the vice chancellor is falling vacant in one and half months and according to the process by now the search should have been conducted to appoint new vice chancellor.
However, the joint staff association executives confirmed that the committee is not as yet appointed and that there are convert, biased disputed and clandestine methods of trying to evaluate the current vice chancellor to award him another contract well aware that he does not qualify for another contract according to the policy.
There have been a lot of complaints about VC Nawangwe on how he is running the university and the current incident was when he was alleged of handpicking and recruiting 26 staffs to run Mak@100 (university century celebrations) events and decided to put them on payroll.
According to the joint staff association executives findings, its indicated that some of the staff were his spouses, girlfriends and relatives of some members on the council and management. So, the top management officers said that they can not allow such a person to come back as the vice chancellor.

Furthermore, the joint staff association executives also resolved that if the contract of the vice chancellor expires before the completion of the search process, the frist deputy Vice chancellor (DVC) Prof. Umar Kakumba should be appointed in acting capacity as per the law.
Members of this joint staff association executives agreed to organize another general Assembly in 30 days to review the progress of these resolutions and forge the way forward.
