By Leonard Kamugisha AkidaThe central bank of Uganda (BOU) has issued out a statement regarding the growing vice of writing or marking of the Ugandan currency by the public.
Prof Emmanuel T Mutebiire, Governor BoU, he warned the general public from defacing the currency which he says such acts are illegal. He emphasized that the central bank is the only regulatory body meant to design features to appear on the currency.

This statement dated 10th December,2019, comes shortly after photos of currency notes of different vslued with political writtings; “Vote Bobi Wine 2021” ‘Vote Museveni 2021′ and “Mze oba genda’ to name a few washed social media platforms. Mutebiire says stamping, writing or marking on the currency – both notes and coins make it lose value.
He warned the public from using, accepting defaced money since they are at a risk of losing value of their currency. He further provided a contact: 0414258441 to call in case of any inquiries about the legal tender of the currency.
