KANUNGU
Hundreds of mourners gathered in Rugyeyo Sub-county, Kanungu District, to pay their final respects to renowned businessman and philanthropist James Musinguzi Garuga, who was laid to rest in his ancestral home.
The solemn ceremony drew dignitaries from across the political spectrum, with Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa representing President Yoweri Museveni. In his tribute, Tayebwa conveyed the President’s condolences, describing Garuga as a “selfless businessman” whose entrepreneurial ventures, including the Garuga Tea Factory in Kanungu played a vital role in youth employment and national development.
“The country has lost Garuga at a time when we needed his wisdom and guidance,” Tayebwa said.
He also shared a personal reflection, calling Garuga a mentor and a pillar in his early political journey. Tayebwa revealed that Garuga had once offered him a house in Makindye rent-free during his time as a youth leader in the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Garuga’s widow, Dr. Peace Garuga, dispelled claims that her late husband’s businesses were funded by government support. She emphasized that all his ventures were built through personal savings and loans. In a heartfelt appeal, she urged the government to invest more in public healthcare facilities:
“Not everyone can afford to fly abroad for treatment like government officials. We need well-equipped hospitals here at home,” she said.
Hon. Salaam Musumba delivered a message on behalf of Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is currently incarcerated in Luzira Prison. Besigye described Garuga as a visionary entrepreneur who believed in empowering every Ugandan to earn a living. He expressed deep sorrow for missing the send-off of his longtime comrade.
Retired Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, representing the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), praised Garuga’s courage and conviction, noting that he was among the earliest critics of the NRM government.
“It’s heartbreaking that he has left us before we could realize the change he so passionately fought for,” Muntu said.
James Musinguzi Garuga leaves behind a legacy of business acumen, generosity, and unwavering commitment to social justice. His impact on Uganda’s economic and political landscape will be remembered for generations.
