In a dramatic turn of events at the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) Delegates Conference held at Kololo Independence Grounds, Security Minister Gen Jim Muhwezi suffered a resounding defeat in the race for Chairperson of Veterans Affairs on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).
Gen Muhwezi, who also serves as the NRM Chairperson for Rukungiri District, was unseated by Rtd Lt Moses Mushabe, the Isingiro District NRM Chairperson, in what insiders are calling a “political upset of the season.” Mushabe secured a commanding 1,047 votes, leaving Muhwezi trailing with 570 votes.
The contest, part of the NRM Veterans League elections, was one of the most closely watched races at the conference, drawing attention from party stalwarts and grassroots mobilizers alike. Delegates cited Mushabe’s grassroots appeal and fresh vision for veteran affairs as key factors in his victory.
However, the aftermath of the vote has stirred controversy. Gen Muhwezi has publicly rejected the results, alleging irregularities in the voting process. He announced his intention to petition the NRM tribunal to challenge Mushabe’s win, signaling a potentially protracted dispute within the party’s veteran ranks.
Political analysts suggest the outcome could mark a shift in internal dynamics within the NRM, as younger or less conventional voices gain traction against long-standing figures.
The NRM Secretariat has yet to issue an official statement regarding the petition, but sources close to the party leadership indicate that the tribunal will convene in the coming days to review the matter.
