Cabinet on Monday (July 24) approved the proposal by the minister of Local Governments Hon. Raphael Magezi seeking to extend the term of office for Local Councils 1 and 2.
This has been revealed by the minister of ICT Dr. Chris Baryomunsi during the media engagement at Media Centre on Tuesday.
According to Baryomunsi, section 175 of the Local Government Act empowers the minister of local government to make regulations and amend the act to extend, renew, reinstate or validate the term of office of any local council administrative units from five years for a period not exceeding 180 days. He says that cabinet invoked on these clauses to endorse the proposal.
The extension takes effect from 10th July, 2023 when the previous term expired.
“The proposal was made to cabinet to extend the life of local councils to a period of 180 days and cabinet approved that proposal,” he said
The proposal now awaits to be tabled to parliament for approval.
“What follows is that we shall have to seek approval of the same from parliament,” Baryomunsi explained
He added, “Once the statutory instrument has been tabled in parliament and approved, the minister of Local Governments will issue to the public a notice for the extension of term of office for local councils.”
