The Uganda cancer society has this week embarked on cancer survivors awareness in the districts of Mbarara,Sheema and Bushenyi.
Speaking to journalists from the districts of Mbarara,Sheema and Bushenyi, Dr. Alfred Jetho a cancer specialist at Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) told journalists that there is no need to worry for cancer is not a death sentence.
Dr. Jetho emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for cancer management. He urged everyone, communities, government and international communities to join hands in sensitization and fight again cancer.
Cancer is a burden to most of the countries but Uganda takes a lead on the East African block. In 2020, the global burden was 34,008 news cases,22,992 deaths and 62,548 being adults. Children with cancer were 5-10% of the total population. He therefore noted that chances to suffer from cancer increase with age.
Uganda cancer society encourages everyone not to wait to see signs and symptoms but to always go for regular screening for cancer especially for cervical, breast, oesophagus/throat,Kaposis (Kisipi).
Uganda can only reduce cancer burden if we change the mindset, discipline, patriotism and proper budget allocations. This can be achieved by change of approach from treatment to public health approach, said Dr. Jetho.
Uganda cancer society will host the National cancer survivors celebrations in Sheema district at Kabwohe playground on 22nd June,2023 aimed at creating awareness and sensitization about cancer prevention, screening, treatment and palliative care for those with cancer already in advanced stages.
