Authorities in Nyundo subcounty Kisoro district have passed a resolution to launch a killing by poison bait stray dogs and cats killing farmers’ animals in the area
The decision was announced by Nyundo subcounty chief, Christine Ntakirutimana who said there are planned collaborative measures by the district production office and district veterinary office to address the challenge of dogs, cats killing sheep, goats and other domesticated animals and birds in the area.
According to Ntakirutimana, authorities have devised plans which involve trapping and eliminating of the stray dogs using poison bait. She warned farmers to keep safety of their animals so that they are not killed in the operation.
At least 91 sheep and goats have been reported killed by stray dogs in the last two weeks in Nyundo subcounty prompting authorities to launch a two weeks killing by poison bait operation against the stray dogs and cats.
The Nyundo subcounty LCIII Chairperson, Fred Mutanbuzi Kanyaruju said stray dogs and cats are not only a threat to Nyundo but also the neighboring sub-counties of Bukimbiri, and Nyakabande. He called for a collective exercise for both affected areas.
