Yesterday the 26th of June 2023, Uganda joined the rest of the world to commemorate the international day in support of the victims of torture. It is international observance held annually to speak out against the crime of torture , to honour and support victims and survivors throughout the world.
Nevertheles, Ismail Kiirya the President of the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) observes that it is shameful to celebrate torture day yet officers in uniform are still practicing torture as a way of handling suspects.
“We want to inform the United Nations that in Uganda today we are still having suspects who are being arraigned before the courts of law with physical signs of torture like limbing, wounds, cuts and the courts of law don’t actually come out to query about what happened to these suspects,” he said.
The young democrat argues that Uganda pretends to be observing this day yet they do the contrary.
He challenges that if Uganda was observing human torture guidelines, there would not be safe houses which are being used as torture chambers in various parts of the country.
Kiirya asked the government and it’s mercenaries to honour the laws prohibiting all forms of torture against Ugandans.
Additionally, the UYD President wished Muslim fraternity a happy Eid al – Adha celebrations slated for tomorrow (June 28) and appealed to them to utilize this day to ask for forgiveness from Allah Almighty
