The Democratic Party (DP) has fired a warning shot at the Uganda Police spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke, insisting that he must stick to his role of keeping law and order than popping his nose in Uganda’s politics.
On July 23rd, the youths are bracing for a march to parliament to call out on the speaker Anita Among and other corrupt officials in the parliament, but Police have warned the public against joining the protest saying that it is unapproved has not been cleared by police.
“Uganda Police Force is issuing a clear warning against attempts to incite violence or breach public order through uncontrolled demonstrations”, said Rusoke.
Reflecting on the Rusoke’s warnings, the DP’s Acting Spokesperson Ismail Kiirya said peaceful demonstration is constitutional and therefore the police must not interfere with protestors.
“You don’t have any liberty to guide us on whether we should demonstrate about corruption or not. Otherwise, you are occupying a position which is not supposed to be yours. Your role is to keep law and order but not to guide Ugandans on what to do as far as corruption is concerned”, Kiirya to Police spokesperson ACP Rusoke.
DP warned that attempts by police to stop Ugandans from expressing their grievances in the face of escalating corruption scandals in the country’s highest legislative body.
Furthermore, DP suggested that if the police are serious about their intentions, they should start by warning the Minister of Internal Affairs, who over the weekend rallied youth to rise up and demand government accountability. Kiirya urged the police to guide protestors on how to hold peaceful demonstrations instead of stopping them.
