Uganda’s First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni, has urged students to prioritize their academic pursuits and moral well-being.
Speaking at the sixth Youth Regional Summit in Masaka, she cautioned against indulging in harmful behaviors, citing concerns about older individuals influencing young students.
“My Life is My Responsibility,” attracted over 3,200 students from various schools in the region.
Kataaha emphasized the importance of responsible choices, warning students about the risks of sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, and academic dropout. She advised students to be mindful of their company, avoid harmful social media content, and prioritize their lives over material temptations.
“Some of the young ladies are getting attracted to getting phones, laptops, and all sorts of things some older men bring to get to young girls. If you see those men please run, don’t feel that getting a phone is more important than your life,“ she said.
Rose Mary Kansiime, First Deputy Headteacher at St. Henry’s College Kitovu, highlighted inadequate learning environments, limited facilities for students with disabilities, insufficient study materials for the new curriculum, uncontrolled social media, early marriages, social stigma, unregulated bars near schools, and the trend of labor export as some of the challenges facing the school and other schools in Uganda.
She called for urgent government interventions to save the education industry in the country.
