BUSHENYI
An 85-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the early hours of New Year’s Day along the Kashenyi–Ryeishe feeder road in Ryeru, Bushenyi District, police have said.
The deceased, identified as Regina Bakaturusake, a resident of Nyabubaare Village in Bushenyi District, was knocked down by a speeding motorcycle at about 1:20am on January 1, 2026, shortly after she had left church where she and others had gathered to usher in the New Year.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the rider of the motorcycle, registration number UFN 071T, fled the scene after causing the accident.
The Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, said the rider is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Police responded to the scene, secured it and recorded statements. Body of the deceased was conveyed to Kitagata Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
SP Tayebwa said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the suspect, and appealed to the public for information on the suspect’s whereabouts.
“Police capabilities to have the suspect arrested are still being employed. We call upon members of the public with information regarding the whereabouts of the rider to discreetly contact the nearest police station,” SP Tayebwa said.
Police pledged swift investigations, and urged road users to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations, especially during festive periods when cases of reckless driving and riding tend to rise.
