BUSHENYI
Tragedy struck Kyamuhunga in Bushenyi District after a gold mining site collapsed, killing five people. Police have confirmed the incident and launched investigations into the cause of the landslide.
District Police Commander Afande Mugizi Felix urged residents to remain calm and warned miners against continuing operations in the affected area. He emphasized that mining activities have been suspended until further notice as authorities work to establish accountability. “The government will take action against anyone found guilty. For now, no one is allowed to continue mining gold,” Mugizi stated.
The five were identified as Mugarura Anthony 23 years from Butoha Magambo, TwiJkye Sansio 30 years, Mujurizi Julius 55 years, Akanyamba Stuart 16 years, and Saul Twinomujuni 25 years.
Kasigazi Donanto, the Bushenyi Deputy RDC condemned the incident and assured families of the deceased that the government will provide support. He further appealed to residents to cooperate with investigators, noting that an environmental assessment will be conducted to determine the root cause of the landslide.
Police confirmed that the bodies of the victims have been handed over to their families for burial arrangements following postmortem examinations.
The collapse has reignited concerns over the safety of artisanal mining in the region, with authorities stressing the need for stricter regulation and environmental monitoring to prevent future tragedies.
