MBARARA CITY
Former National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Mbarara City North constituency, Peter Mpaka Ayamba, has officially crossed over to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) after withdrawing from the race citing lack of support from his former party.
Mpaka, who had earlier lamented that NUP failed to provide him with campaign materials and financial backing, confirmed his decision in a telephone interview. He revealed that despite tendering his resignation to NUP leadership on November 17th, he received no response from the party even after ten days.
“I could not kill my political career. That’s why I chose to join NRM in anticipation that at one time in future I will still contest and represent my people on the NRM ticket,” Mpaka stated.
According to Mpaka, his move was influenced by retired Colonel Murari Sam Karogo, the commander of reserve forces in the Ankole region, who assured him that NRM was ready to accommodate him and his campaign team in form of rehabilitation.
Mpaka disclosed that he has joined NRM together with his mobilizers and pledged to rally support for President Yoweri Museveni and other NRM flag bearers in the constituency.
The defection marks a significant shift in the political dynamics of Mbarara City North, where NUP had hoped to strengthen its presence. Mpaka’s departure underscores ongoing challenges within the opposition party regarding candidate support and resource mobilization.
