KAMPALA
The Uganda Police Force has said the case file for Ggaba Day Care Centre attack suspect is nearing completion and will soon be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Uganda for legal guidance and sanctioning.
“The suspect is being processed. His file will be submitted to the DPP for perusal and advice,” said ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the Police Spokesperson.
It should be recalled that on Holy Thursday, four juviniles, all pupils at Ggaba Day Care Centre in Makindye Division Kampala were gruesomely killed by an assassin who attacked the school after disguising as a parent.
The suspect, identified as Okello Christopher Onyum, was arrested and rescued from angry mob who had attempted to lynch him. He is currently in custody as police finalize investigations.
The case has attracted widespread attention following the circulation of a new video on social media in which a woman alleges that the suspect was previously involved in the murder of her child but evaded justice.
Kituuma said police have taken keen interest in the allegations and are actively reviewing the claims as part of the ongoing inquiries.
“There is a video of a woman who alleges that the suspect murdered her child and some how got off the hook,” Kituuma said. “We have picked interest in that matter too.”
The Ggaba incident has raised concerns over the safety of children in learning institutions, with many calling for thorough investigations into the matter.
Police have urged the public to remain calm, stating that all victims will receive justice and that the suspect will be held fully accountable under the law
“It is our ultimate objective is to see that the victims get justice and hold the perpetrator accountable.”
This publication has learned that President Museveni has extended a Shs10 million condolences to each of the bereaved families, and overturned the decision by higher education state minister JC Muyingo to close the Schools under Ggaba Community Church where the incident happened. The reopened institutions include Maranatha High School and Maranatha Christian Primary School, both managed by Ggaba Community Church. However, the Day Care remains temporarily closed.
“That one will remain closed because it is a crime scene. We need to make a few changes to secure the children,” President Museveni said, in an eulogy read on his behalf by Youth and Children Affairs Minister,Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi during a requiem service on Easter Monday.
Meanwhile, the suspect appeared at Makindye Court this afternoon and was formally charged with four counts of murder and remanded to Luzira Prison until tomorrow, Wednesday 8 April. Aidah Nanjala, the Makindye Grade One Magistrate asked him to apply for bail, noting that it’s his constitutional rights.
“It’s your right to apply for a bail but in the High Court, you also have rights to legal representation and there will be a lawyer provided to you and paid by the State,” she said.
