MBARARA
The Ugandan media fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran journalist and seasoned media manager Claire Chopper, who passed away on Saturday morning at Devine Mercy Hospital in Mbarara, according to close family sources.
Until her untimely death, Chopper served as the General Manager of Greater Afrikan Radio, a prominent station based in Mbarara City. Known for her commanding presence on air and sharp editorial instincts, she played a pivotal role in shaping regional broadcasting and mentoring young journalists across western Uganda.
In 2021, Chopper made her political debut by contesting for the Mbarara City Woman Member of Parliament seat. Though she did not succeed in that bid, her passion for public service remained strong. Earlier this year, she had declared her intention to contest again in the 2026 elections as an independent candidate.
Family friends say Chopper succumbed to complications believed to be related to stress and pressure, though an official cause of death has not been released. Her passing has left a deep void in both the media and political spheres.
Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, fans, and community leaders who remember her not only as a formidable journalist but as a visionary voice for civic engagement and empowerment.
Funeral arrangements are underway, and the family is expected to release an official statement in the coming days.
