Authorities at Gulu City have suspended street vending and hawking on all streets of the city.

According to a public announcement dated June 27 by Isaiah Tumwesigye, the Gulu City Town Clerk; which Parrots UG seen, the new directive will take effect on July 1.

“The town clerk of Gulu City informs the general public that effective 1st July, 2022, no business will be allowed on the pavements, walkways, shop verandas, back streeys,corridors, open spaces and along the streets of Gulu City,” said Tumwesigye

The council has also prohibited loading and offloading ofpassengers or goods along the streets and fuel stations.

“All buses, taxis, traillers, lorries, Tuk Tuks must go to designated Gulu main bus park, Lamogi Ber, and the new bus terminal,” he added.

In addition, hawkers and roadside vendors have been warned on formulating illegal markets in the evening hours and urged to relocate to designated markets like Gulu main market, Gulu modern market, Wilobo Market and other known markets within the city.

Tumwesigye warns that failure to comply to the directive will lead to legal actions against the vendors.

This comes barely six months after Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) banned street vending in Kampala in a campaign dubbed; “Cleaning up the city”. Many hawkers and vendors had run to new cities and other urban areas unfortunately, they are also being chassed.
