Mariam Nakibuuka, the fallen senior protection associate at Defend Defenders a non-profit human rights organisation will be laid to rest today on Wednesday July 28.
Defend Defenders is a non-profit organisation that promotes, protects and strengthen the works of human rights defenders in East Africa and the horn of Africa.
Nakibuuka, passed on Monday 26 July 2021, at Kampala hospital after battling with illnesses. She allegedly succumbed to COVID-19.
She will be laid to rest on Wednesday July 28 at 12PM and funeral will be conducted with limited number while others will attend via zoom as a measure to contain the possible spread of COVID-19 as well as observing the SOPs.
According to a statement by Executive Director, Defend Defenders, Hassan Shire, who also doubles as the Chairperson African Defenders, Nakibuuka joined Defend Defenders in 2015 as an intern and rose through the ranks from being a fellow, a Protection Assistant, to becoming a Senior Protection Associate.
Defend Defenders has described Nakibuuka as a passionate human rights activist who ensured safety and support of those defending the same.
“She was a dedicated and committed employee and human rights defender, working tirelessly to ensure human rights defenders at risk received the and support needed to continue their work. She will be remembered for her passion for human rights, care for the safety and wellbeing of both her colleagues and human rights defenders,” read a statement on the organisation’s website.
