LIRA
Police in Lira district are hunting for a man suspected of stabbing his 39-year-old wife to death following a domestic dispute over a smartphone.
The deceased has been identified as Evelyne Atoo, a resident of Awodyek Sub-county in Lira district.
It is reported that Atoo had acquired a smartphone on loan. However, her husband, Bonny Olungu, suspected that the phone had been bought for her by another man leading into a tragic misunderstanding between the couple on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at around 6:30pm.
During the altercation, Olungu allegedly stabbed Atoo with a sharp knife, leaving her critically injured.
Atoo was rushed to Emmanuel Medical Clinic in Amac Trading Centre while bleeding profusely. Morish Okello, a medic at the facility, said the victim was brought in by her husband in critical condition.
“She had lost a lot of blood due to excessive bleeding. We tried to save her life but it was too late. Unfortunately, we did not succeed,” Okello said.
The North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, John Patrick Okema, confirmed the incident, saying officers visited and documented the crime scene and recovered a knife suspected to have been used in the attack.
“The body was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examination,” Okema said.
Okema condemned the incident and urged members of the public to resolve domestic disputes through lawful and peaceful means.
“We appeal to couples to seek help from relevant local authorities and community leaders instead of taking the law into their own hands. Violence only leads to loss and suffering,” he said.
Police have since launched a manhunt for Olungu, who is currently on the run.
“Intelligence-led efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the suspect,” Okema added
