As a healthcare professional, I have encountered numerous expectant mothers who forego crucial ultrasound scans due to misconceptions about their safety. Let’s set the record straight: Ultrasound scans are a vital, non-invasive, and entirely safe tool for monitoring fetal development and ensuring a healthy pregnancy.

Dr. Faith Nabushawo, an Obstetrics and Gaenacology masters student at KIU highlighted numerous benefits Ultrasound scans offer including; confirming pregnancy and detecting potential issues early, determining gestational age and due date, monitoring fetal growth and development, identifying potential abnormalities or complications, guiding prenatal care and decision-making among other things.

Obstetric ultrasound scan showing development of a baby

Nabushawo noted that for a normal, low-risk pregnancy, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends at least four ultrasound scans: where First Trimester (7-8 weeks) is considered as Dating Scan which confirms pregnancy, detects heartbeat, and establishes due date.

Second Trimester (18-22 weeks) scan also known as Fetal Anatomical Survey, examines fetal anatomy, ruling out major abnormalities.

She also noted that third Trimester (32-34 weeks) helps to asses fetal anatomy, placenta position, and prepares for delivery while at term (37 weeks) a scan is done to confirm fetal position and ensures readiness for delivery.

Addressing Concerns and Myths

Some expectant mothers worry that ultrasound scans can harm their baby. Rest assured, ultrasound technology uses sound waves, not radiation, making it completely safe for fetal development.

Why Ultrasound Scans Matter

Nabushawo revealed that regular ultrasound scans enable healthcare providers to monitor fetal growth and detect potential issues, identify high-risk pregnancies and provide targeted care plan for safe delivery and empower expectant mothers with knowledge and reassurance.

She urged expectant mothers not to let misconceptions about ultrasound scans compromise their pregnancy care and advised them to schedule regular ultrasounds with their healthcare providers to ensure a healthy, happy journey.
