KABALE
Kabale regional referral hospital has denied reports circulating on social media that a female intern was gang-raped at the hospital.
Dr. Nyeko John Philbert, the hospital Director made the statement on Monday, clarifying that no such incident was recorded at the institution. He further stated that the hospital received a group of internship doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, and rented a building outside the premises for their accommodation since there was not enough space.
According to Dr. Nyeko, the hospital had contracted the construction of an intern complex to provide adequate and conducive accommodation for interns. However, the contractor has not yet handed over the hostel, and as such, the interns had to seek alternative accommodation outside the hospital premises.
He acknowledged that some of the interns reported cases of robbery, which were reported and handled by relevant authorities.
Dr. Nyeko reiterated the hospital’s commitment to providing adequate accommodation for interns and said that efforts were ongoing to have the new complex handed over to the hospital management. He implored all concerned parties to be patient as the matter is being resolved.
Internship programs are vital in medical institutions, as they afford new graduates the opportunity to gain practical experience in a professional environment.
The hospital’s management’s swift response to the misinformation circulating on social media is commendable, as it helps to dispel any misgivings that potential interns may have concerning their safety and welfare at the institution.
