Mbarara City has once again entrusted its leadership to Robert Kakyebezi Mugabe, who secured a decisive win in the latest mayoral election, reaffirming his political influence and popularity in the region.
The results were officially announced by Returning Officer Atuhurra Violet, who confirmed that the tallying process was conducted in accordance with Section 147 of the Local Governments Act, Cap. 138. After compiling figures from all Declaration of Results Forms, Kakyebezi emerged far ahead of his competitors.
Kakyebezi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, garnered 21,117 votes, placing him firmly at the top of the race. His closest challenger, Katembeya Stanley of the PFF, received 8,731 votes, while independent candidate Agaba Senate followed with 2,756 votes. Other contenders trailed with smaller tallies, including:Itogoro Mark Nyabihemu (NUP): 533 votes, Tugume Mweteise Bintabara (Independent): 170 votes
In total, 33,307 valid votes were cast across the city. The Returning Officer also reported 497 rejected ballots and 168 spoilt ballot papers, bringing the total number of ballot papers counted to 33,804.
With the largest share of the vote, Kakyebezi was declared the elected mayor of Mbarara City. His victory marks a significant political comeback and reinforces his standing among city residents who have previously entrusted him with the stewardship of the rapidly growing urban center.
The win also signals continuity in leadership at a time when Mbarara City is navigating major infrastructural expansion, urban planning challenges, and service delivery reforms.
As Kakyebezi prepares to embark on another term, expectations are high. Residents will be watching closely to see how he addresses key issues such as road rehabilitation, waste management, and economic revitalization in one of western Uganda’s most vibrant cities.
