RUKUNGIRI
Police in Rukungiri district have arrested a 23-year-old Kampala University student for allegedly impersonating a candidate in the ongoing Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.
The suspect, Cleophas Mbamanyire, a Bachelor of Arts with Education student at Kampala University’s Luwero Campus, was found sitting for the General Paper examination on behalf of another candidate, identified as Akampurira Brenda.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, said Mbamanyire, a resident of Ruhabo 2 A Cell, Rutunguru Parish in Ihunga Sub-county, Ntungamo district, was intercepted on Thursday after an intelligence tip-off from the chief invigilator at Bugangari Secondary School.
According to Maate, chief invigilator Masiko Ambrose alerted UNEB officials and police after noticing irregularities during the examination session at about 11:00am.
“Upon verification, it was established that the person writing the exam was not the registered candidate. She was immediately apprehended,” Maate said.
Police have since recorded statements from witnesses and recovered documents believed to have been used in the impersonation. Investigations are underway to determine how the suspect accessed the examination room and whether other individuals were involved.
Maate urged the public to support efforts to safeguard the integrity of national examinations.
“Impersonation undermines the credibility of the entire assessment process. We call upon communities and school administrators to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities,” he said.
