A university student was killed in a brutal assault early Wednesday morning in a suspected targeted robbery.
Arinaitwe Nicholas, 23, a third-year student at Kyambogo University pursuing a Bachelor of Interior and Landscape Design, was discovered dead with severe head injuries and a wound above his right ear, according to university officials.
Nicholas, was supporting himself by operating a boda boda business. He was attacked by unknown assailants who later stole his motorcycle.
Police confirmed that his body was taken to City Mortuary for a post-mortem report. Medical examiners concluded that he died from blunt force trauma to the skull, with multiple fractures reported.
“The loss of Nicholas is deeply tragic and has shocked the entire university community,” said Ms. Bridget Mugume of the Student Welfare Department. “He was industrious, dedicated to his studies, and working hard to support himself.”
Kulubya Hall residents where Nicholas was residing described him as humble and hardworking student.
In a notice by Prof. Eli Katunguka, Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor, the university has taken responsibility for covering the cost of the body’s preparation, coffin, and transportation to the student’s ancestral home in Mitooma District in western Uganda.
“An official handover to his family was scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday,” Prof. Katunguka said.
“The university has arranged for a 50-seater bus to transport students who wish to attend the burial.”
Nicholas will be laid to rest on Friday, May 23, at 2pm at his ancestral home in Rwanyabuzaana Village, Rurehe Sub-county, Mitooma District.
Police have launched an investigation into the killing, but no arrests have been made as of press time.
