Peter Mpaka Ayamba, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for Mbarara City North, has announced his withdrawal from the parliamentary race shortly after his nomination.
Mpaka confirmed that despite repeated attempts to seek campaign materials and support from the NUP leadership, his requests went unanswered. He explained that while he had already campaigned across seven parishes, the exercise proved financially demanding and unsustainable without party backing.
“A party is a vehicle that drives the interests of its members, but it seems NUP is only focused on Buganda,” Mpaka remarked.
The candidate had been contesting against eight other aspirants, five of whom are NRM-leaning independents. Mpaka believes he had a strong chance of winning but now feels compelled to reconsider his political future.
Speaking to our reporter, Mpaka revealed that he is weighing two options: stepping away from politics to return to his teaching career or continuing as an independent candidate. He added that he remains open to rejoining NUP if the party provides the necessary support but will not allow to be called a political failure after he lost the 2021 Mbarara city mayoral seat yet the reason is well known.
