Police in Mbarara City on Monday retrieved the body of a missing hawker from River Rwizi.
The deceased is Corneli Garamba Kyadondo, born in Rukungiri and a wheelbarrow pusher in Mbarara central market.
He reportedly went missing on Monday last week and all attempts by his family and friends to search for him failed until yesterday (October 9) when his body was seen floating in Rwizi River near Katete bridge.
It is alleged that Garamba drowned in the river while he attempted to cross via the broken TASO village bridge to Nyamitanga where he has been staying.
Police arrived at the scene of the accident, retrieved and conveyed the body to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem.
Eye witnesses say this is a fourth drowning incident happening in River Rwizi in a period of one week. They appealed to the city counsel to repair broken bridges in the city area because the breakages do not only paralyze businesses but also cause health risks to road users.
