A woman in Mitooma District has urged former army commander and Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate, Gen. Mugisha Muntu, to allow President Yoweri Museveni another term in office.

In a trending video, Proviah Bashabire, a resident of Nyakagongo in Kabira Town Council, Ruhinda South County, is heard asking Muntu not to criticise Museveni’s government but to let him complete what she described as his “last term.”

“Museveni ni sho, akakuyamba mbwenu reeka kumugambaho kubi,” Bashabire said in Runyankole, meaning “Museveni is like your father, he helped you and therefore, stop ill about him.” Bashabire further appealed to Muntu to wait for Museveni’s final term, promising to support his bid in the subsequent elections.

“Do not blame President Museveni. I am appealing to you to allow him a re-election for his last term, and when you contest next time, I will mobilize support for you,” she said.

Gen. Muntu, who was campaigning in Kabira Town on October 2, did not respond harshly but acknowledged her opinion, saying the discussion reflected Uganda’s democratic diversity.
He, however, reminded supporters that Museveni had deviated from the ideals that took them to the bush to fight the UPC government.

Muntu pledged that his administration would promote equity, human rights, rule of law and socio-economic transformation if elected president.

However, there is no indication that President Museveni has declared the 2026 general elections as his last term, as claimed by Bashabire. The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has already begun mobilizing for Museveni’s possible candidature in the 2031 elections.

There is also growing speculation that Museveni is grooming his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the current Chief of Defence Forces as a potential successor.
