The recovery operation at the Kiteezi landfill site has made significant progress, with six more bodies retrieved today 14th August, 2024.
According to the Kampala metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the operation resumed in high gear today, without any interruptions.
The identities of the six bodies recovered today have been confirmed as: Hairati Natumanya, 20 years old, Lwere Ronald a brother to Kyakanyi Raymond, Owori Moses a 3 years old child, Okello Richard 31 years old, Alowo Jane a 33 years old and Acheng Jane 6 years old.
Onyango revealed that the registration committee has previously reported that 120 people are currently sheltered at the Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playground and 39 people are registered as missing including 35 community members and 4 garbage collectors. Additionally, 33 homes are suspected to have been covered by debris during the incident on Saturday, August 10.
In a separate development, Police arrested five suspects on the evening of 13th August who were impersonating victims of the tragedy to receive compensation and relief items. They are being held at Kiteezi Police Station on charges of impersonation.
Onyango confirmed that the recovery operation is ongoing, with efforts to retrieve more bodies and debris. The incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for improved waste management and urban planning in the city.
