President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has stirred controversy by labeling journalists from the Busoga region as “broke,” citing their low pay and the influence money has on their work.
Museveni in Busoga Region for his tour to assess the performance of the Parish Development Model (PDM) funds in the region.
He told journalists that they are often swayed by financial incentives due to their financial struggles and promised to donate Shs100 millions to the Busoga Journalists SACCO.
“I know you are poor and you work for poor media houses. Now I want to immunize you with Shs100 million so that you stop being used,” Museveni said.
In addition to financial support, Museveni also pledged to purchase a commuter taxi for the journalists’ Sacco in Busoga, helping ease their transportation challenges.
He also donated Shs6 million to three LC1 chairpersons to buy motorcycles for their transport among other donations to the young entrepreneurs in the region including graduates.
Museveni’s visit continues as he evaluates the impact of the PDM funds, which aim to reduce poverty and boost economic growth in Uganda’s rural areas.
