The pause comes few hours after Congolese government accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels that are errorizing the country’s eastern area. Further reports indicated that Uganda soldiers are indirectly aiding the rebels, however, updf officials in Kampala have outrightly dismissed the allegations.
On 13 June, the M23 rebels invidaded Eastern DRC forcing over 150 Congolese army and police officers to Uganda through the Bunagana border.
Bunagana border connects Uganda’s Kisoro district in the south-west part of the country to the DRC’s Rushuru, North Kivu Province, is located 70km north-east of Goma.
“Fighting between M23 rebels and Forces Armées de la République Démocratique du Congo (FARDC) soldiers intensified on Sunday 12 June and throughout the night. The rebels, who resumed fighting in May, emerged victorious. They briefly captured the same border post in 2013.” Reports indicated.
Congolese in Eastern Gomba have since taken on streets opposing the operations of foreign army in DRC who they accuse of looting their properties.
In November 2021, the UPDF under the commanded of Maj Gen Kayanja Muhanga launched air and artillery attacks on ADF camps in the thick Eastern DRC forests in an operation, code named, “Operation Shujaa“.
This was after terrorists alleged to be members of the Allied Democratic Forces exploded bombs in Kampala and in other parts of Uganda.
The UPDF and FARDC have since worked to gether against ADF operations in Eastern DRC hideouts.
It is not clear why and when the updf is withdrawing from DRC but speculators say the order to pause could be a result of the accusations.
