The National Drug Authority (NDA)  launched investigations following the arrest of ten individuals accused of tampering with the expiry dates on government-issued drugs and diagnostic devices. The arrests were made during an operation targeting drug stores located on Wilson Street in Kampala’s city center.

During the crackdown, NDA officials recovered over 40 boxes of government drugs, including antiretroviral (ARV) medication, HIV testing kits, and relabeled malaria and HIV diagnostic devices. The suspects are alleged to have altered the expiry dates on these critical supplies, posing severe risks to public health.

Abiaz Rwamwiri, the NDA spokesperson, urged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities involving medical products. “This malpractice puts countless lives at risk by compromising the accuracy of test results and the effectiveness of treatments,” he emphasized.

The NDA’s operation highlights the ongoing challenge of safeguarding Uganda’s health sector against individuals attempting to profit at the expense of public safety. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are determined to bring those responsible to justice.

Rwamwiri encouraged the public to remain alert and report any suspected fraudulent activity involving medical supplies to ensure the safety and well-being of all Ugandans.
