On 26th of May 2023, The president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni assented a bill that prohibit any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex, to prohibit the promotion or recognition of sexual relations between persons of the same sex, and for related matters.
Today the World Bank has paused the acquisition of Loans by Uganda from its group over the Anti. Homosexuality Act .
In a statement the World bank accuses Uganda of contradicting with the World bank values for eradicating poverty on the planet.
“Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Act fundamentally contradicts the World Bank Group’s values. We believe in vision to eradicate poverty on livable planet can only succeed if it includes everyone irrespective of race,gender,or sexuality. This law undermines those efforts.inclusion and non discrimination sit at the heart of our work around the World” statement said
The statement also added that no new financing to Uganda will be presented to our Board of executive Directors until the efficacy of the additional measures has been tested.
“Third-party monitoring and grievance redress mechanisms will significantly increase,allowing us to take corrective action as necessary “
The statement has raised concerns among government officials including Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s Permanent representative to the United Nations who described their behavior as whimsical and the values refered to in taking this decision are not Universal and that that they should be contested.
