The Electoral Commission of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially announced a change in the polling date for its parliamentary flag bearer elections, moving the vote from July 16 to July 17, 2025.
This adjustment was communicated in a circular issued by Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, and made in consultation with the party’s National Chairman. The decision follows a scheduling conflict with the revised national Electoral Commission roadmap, particularly the Persons With Disabilities (PWD) Committee elections, which are slated for July 16 at the sub-county level.
“This change ensures that NRM’s internal electoral process does not clash with national electoral activities,” Dr. Odoi stated in his memo to the Chairperson of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus.
The circular emphasized the importance of all party stakeholders taking note of the revised date to guarantee a smooth and well-coordinated election process. These internal elections are a pivotal step in selecting the NRM’s official candidates for the upcoming general elections. Aspirants now have an extra day to finalize preparations ahead of the decisive vote.
In parallel, the NRM Electoral Commission is undertaking a review of district registrars nationwide to enhance transparency and efficiency in the party primaries.
Speaking to journalists on June 30th just before the close of nominations for mayoral, parliamentary, and district chairperson races, Dr. Odoi urged all candidates and their supporters to strictly adhere to the established guidelines and code of conduct as internal campaigns officially begin.
Among the key directives is a ban on carrying firearms during campaign rallies.
“Those with guns should leave them with their bodyguards,” Odoi warned, referencing recent unrest in Sembabule that resulted in one fatality.
He also cautioned against the use of abusive language and personal attacks, underscoring the commission’s commitment to a peaceful and respectful campaign season.
