Residents of Kashenyi Parish in Ngoma Sub-County, Rushenyi County, Ntungamo District, have threatened to boycott the 2026 NRM primaries and general elections unless their longstanding demands are addressed.
The declaration was made during a Thursday meeting (February 27) involving local leaders and residents. Locals expressed frustration over unfulfilled promises related to infrastructure and public services, and accused their leaders including the district chairperson and area member of parliament of neglecting development in the district.
According to Godon Nabasa, chairperson of Kashenyi Centre, and Wilson Nkubana, chairman of Bunusa Cell, the government extended electricity to the area in 2021. However, shortly after the elections, power was cut off, leaving only poles and wires in place.
The leaders claim that many residents had acquired loans to install electric power in their homes and commercial buildings, however, to their dismay they were only left with poles and wires, and are now struggling to repay their debts.
Residents also decried the poor state of roads, inadequate healthcare facilities, and indifferent leadership. They particularly criticized authorities for failing to repair the Akabare Bridge in Mutungu Cell which connects Rushenyi and Ruhaama counties.
Dairy farmers in the area say that the poor road network has also affected their business as they struggle to access markets for their dairy products.
Ntungamo district produces over 18,000 liters of milk daily. Farmers say that their milk often goes to waste because of the malfunctioning milk coolers due to the lack of electricity.
Residents argued that Kashenyi has consistently voted 100% for the ruling NRM party in Ntungamo District but has seen little development in return.
In response to their frustrations, they have vowed to block any politician from putting up campaign posters in the area unless their concerns are addressed.
