BUSHENYI

The Managing Director of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha, has urged Ugandan youth to stop wasting time and money on social media activities that do not contribute to their personal growth or economic survival.

Speaking on Saturday at Kagari in Ibaare Sub-county, Bushenyi District, during the launch of new water extension projects, Mugisha expressed concern that many young people use social media to insult and blackmail others, especially leaders, instead of engaging in productive discussions.

“It is very unfortunate that most of our youth spend much of their time on social media abusing and blackmailing each other, especially the leaders,” Mugisha said. “Social media should be used to search for knowledge, opportunities, and to build networks and bridges that can connect you to a better future.”

He added that while social media provides a platform to engage with leaders, such engagement should be meaningful and aimed at fostering development.

“Engage your leaders productively. Don’t waste your data and time on things that don’t contribute to your well-being,” he advised.

During the event, Mugisha revealed that President Yoweri Museveni had allocated Shs81 billion to NWSC to expand safe and clean water supply across the country.

“Our mandate is urban-based, but the President now wants every sub-county and every village to have access to clean and safe water,” he said, noting that the funding will support ongoing efforts to extend water services to rural communities.

Bushenyi District Woman Member of Parliament, Annet Katusiime Mugisha, commended NWSC for bridging the water gap in the region and other districts.

She pledged to continue lobbying the government to raise water coverage to over 90 percent and support initiatives that fight poverty and underdevelopment.

The new water projects launched in Ibaare Sub-county are expected to benefit several villages by improving access to safe water and reducing water-borne diseases in the area.
