The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has so far nominated 102 candidates to contest for both Parliamentary and Local Council V (LCV) chairperson seats under its party ticket in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
The nomination exercise, which began on July 10, 2025, officially concluded today (July 15, 2025), at the party’s headquarters in Kampala.
Among the notable nominees is Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi, who currently represents Oyam South in Parliament. Amongi has been duly nominated to contest for the Lira City Woman Member of Parliament seat, presently held by Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng.
Speaking after her nomination, Amongi pledged to tackle key issues affecting Lira City, including unemployment, urban poverty, inequality, crime, and insecurity. She said the city needs a seasoned and effective leader, attributing its current challenges to what she described as a “lack of credible leadership.”
“I am not standing to unseat Minister Aceng, but to serve the people of my home area and deliver impactful change,” Amongi clarified.

Also nominated was Hon. Vincent Shedrick Obong Eyit, the current MP for Lira City West Division, who is seeking re-election on the UPC ticket. He promised to focus on improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare if given a renewed mandate.
The UPC nomination process is part of the party’s early preparations for the 2026 general elections. Party officials say the remaining candidates for other positions will be announced in due course.
