KAMPALA
National Water and Sewage Corporation has alleged that some police officers from fire brigade could be selling water illegally.
The allegations follow increased theft of water from designated fire hydrants especially in 897 fire hydrants in the Kampala Metropolitan area.
Eng. Silver Mugisha, MD NWSC says some individuals and institutions including police officers are stealing water that is meant to keep water for firefighting.
“You have heard that there’s always pressure for us to have fire hydrants. So people go to those fire hydrants including those who sell water – some of them just go and pick water from the fire hydrants, even police. Our fire hydrants are under constant use even when there’s no fire to fight,” he said.
The corporation further reported that there is no clear accountability of where the water which firefighting trucks fetch is used. Also, the NWSC is recording losses from about 10 percent of the customers on illegal water connections across the country.
NWSC is mandated to provide water in the designated water hydrants with enough water to fight fire outbreaks.
